Solar on the Train

Updated: May 27, 2020

We had our solar powered booth at the Mesa County Fair this year. It was over 100 degrees every day, with lots and lots of great sunshine. We had 3 or 4 portable swamp coolers in our booth, all run from solar panels. We had the coolest booth at the fair!

Right next to us was the fair train station, a great little train that would run everyone from the parking lot all the way around the fair grounds. Jim Haar is the owner and Engineer for All Aboard! Train company. He hauls his train all over the mountain west working fairs and festivals. Since it was over 100 degrees, and we had the coolest booth, Jim would stop in every so often to stand in front of our swamp coolers.

Jim’s train runs on 48V golf cart batteries, but he wanted a solar panel on the roof of the engine in order to upgrade his PA system to a better quality one that runs off of 120VAC. The panels had to be easily removable. We designed a dual flexible panel for the roof, which then charges our EZ-PTG-MINI Solar Generator. The MINI provides plenty of good clean power for all of the electronics in the cab.

Next year we are thinking of adding flexible solar panels to the roofs of all the cars, making the All Aboard! Train the greenest train in the land! We look forward to seeing Engineer Jim next year at the Mesa County Fair. If you are interested in hiring Jim and his custom train for your fair or festival, contact Jim at traintours@gmail.com.
